The rule for overtaking on skis is not complicated, but many skiers – especially beginners – aren’t aware of the priority rule. It’s this simple – fast skiers must always give way to slower skiers.
If you are travelling at speed, it is your responsibility to give plenty of room to the skiers you are overtaking and you must be able to avoid them, regardless of how erratically or suddenly they change direction. If you can’t avoid them, you are travelling too fast.
In the case of a collision, it is always the faster skier who is at fault and you could find yourself losing your ski pass. If the other person is injured, in addition to any guilt you may feel, you may also find yourself being prosecuted.
Please ski with care and ensure you always have enough control to avoid the people in front of you.
