st martin chalets’ location
The chalets are nestled beneath our local mountain, Speiereck – the highest skiable peak in the region. We are just 2 minutes walk from the local inn and only a 5-minute walk from the main ski lift. A further 10 minutes stroll in the same direction and you’ll be in the picturesque town of St. Michael, where you’ll find the local shops, banks, ski schools, bars and restaurants. If you’re feeling lazy or want to zip across to the next ski area, there’s a free ski bus stop at the end of our road.
For those among you who enjoy exploring, St Martin is located within easy striking distance of numerous places of interest. There’s plenty of culture to see, both locally and further afield in Salzburg, and the whole Lungau region is bursting with natural beauty, Austrian charm and opportunities to do things you simply won’t find anywhere else.
We have two historic castles on our doorstep – Mauterndorf Castle and the stunning Schloß Moosham – and we’re a stone’s throw from the beautiful countryside of Salzkammergut. We’re also only an hour or so away from Austria’s borders with northern Italy and Slovenia.
Whatever your intentions though, most of our lovely guests find themselves staying close to home. The Lungau region has a lot to offer, both culturally and in terms of scenery. In fact, the Lungau region was recently recognised by UNESCO as Austria’s most recent official Biosphere Region.

We have negotiated discounted rates on car hire with Rhino Car Hire or there’s Auto Europe if you want to make a comparison. The eco-conscious among you may be pleased to know that the Rhino website shows the CO2 emissions and MPG for all their cars. We have ample parking here at the resort, with one space per chalet and additional room under our covered parking area.
British Airways, Ryanair, Thomson Airways operate flights to Salzburg Airport and sometimes Klagenfurt Airport from airports across the UK, with St Michael and St Martin Chalets located almost equidistant between these two airports, at just over an hour’s drive from each. We always use Skyscanner to find the best flights because it allows you to check multiple airlines at once (select your airports and ‘whole month’ to find the cheapest flights).
Lufthansa, Air Berlin, Turkish Airlines, Austrian Airlines and germanwings also fly to Salzburg Airport from the UK. Or why not fly into Munich airport or Venice Airport which are both just under 3 hours drive from us. Vienna airport is approximately 3.5hrs drive. We are only an hours drive from the Italian and Slovenian borders too so you can easily combine a stay with your wider visit to this region.
Alternatively, if you prefer, you can let us organise your transfers for you with a local business called Lehenauer, which provides a reasonably priced transfer service for around €35 Euros. In winter, this service starts just before Christmas and runs to April, although please be aware that this can involve a wait as they sometimes wait for another flight before leaving the airport. It’s a good option though if you’re not planning on hiring your own car.
getting around lungau

lungau ski bus
The most environmentally-friendly and low-cost option is to take the public ski bus, which travels regularly between the region’s towns and ski areas between 8am and 6pm. Anyone with a valid ski pass can travel between the four main ski areas – Grosseck-Speiereck, Katschberg, Aineck and Fanningberg. For those with the LUNGO ski pass, you can add Obertauern to that list.
More often than not, if you’re wearing your ski gear, the driver won’t look at your pass. If you want to get around in normal clothing, however, we would recommend keeping your ski pass with you. You never know!
ski buses for groups
Anyone holding school, youth group or group ski passes will not be entitled automatically to free bus travel. This can be added for an additional fare of approximately €10 (prices subject to change).
