The Austrian Alps around Lungau are full of opportunities for cyclists – both on the roads and in the mountains. We have hundreds of family-friendly cycle paths and challenging cross-country routes, which are suitable for cyclists of all abilities.
The roads in Lungau are generally quiet and if you know where to go, which we do, it’s possible to cover tens of kilometres without ever seeing a car. In some places, cars simply aren’t allowed, which means there are miles and miles of flat, asphalt surfaces just for you and your road bike.
Trail and Mountain Biking
This is one of the Lungau region’s biggest selling points. Generally our trails are well signposted, which means you can take your bike (or hire one of ours) and head off into the hills on your own. We’ll set you up with a map and give you some instructions on where to head, or you can join one of our organised bike rides. As well as unmarked trails, there are 15 marked trails of various difficulty levels and elevation changes, covering a total of 560km. Bike transport is included in the Speiereck lift price, which means you can spend all day bombing down, then use the gondolas from St Martin or Mauterndorf to get back up again.
Most inns and restaurants are cyclist-friendly, many of which have outdoor seating and gardens where they can serve you all manner of local specialities. If you’d rather not bring your own bike, there are plenty of hire centres in St Michael and we’ll happily organise this on your behalf, prior to your visit.
Throughout the spring, summer and autumn we lead our own cycle tours. These vary from short trips taking no more than a morning, to 300km+ tours of the Mur Valley. Our approach is relaxed and we’ll try to organise groups according to ability and experience. If you’d prefer to head out alone, we’ll talk you through our favourite routes and provide a map of the local area. Whatever your level, there’s something here for you.

Our KTM electric bikes are a perfect way to explore Lungau. You can pedal up to 90km around, up and down the mountains, with 45 recharging stations (for bike and rider!!) dotted around the region. There’s even one on the top of Speiereck!! The bike recharges itself when zooming downhill and offers 4 levels of support for the uphill challenges. E-Bikes are one of the area’s newer attractions and we have been spearheading this initiative ourselves. Not only is it a sustainable form of transport, we also believe it’s an excellent facility for our guests. An e-Bike is a normal road or mountain bike, which has been modified with an inconspicuous battery pack. It’s the perfect way for experts and less experienced riders to ride together and, with the recharging stations already in place, you can ride all day without fear of running out of battery life. We have purchased our own e-Bikes: we have KTM e-race mountain bikes and AVE tour e-city bikes, which are available for rent for €20,00 per day, €7,00 per hour, or come free with certain packages. In total there are more than 300 e-bikes for rent and 100 charging stations in the region.
