outdoor activities in ‘the lungau’
Unsurprisingly, our location in the heart of Lungau and Austria’s newest UNESCO Biosphere Reserve means that you and your friends and family will experience pure, unadulterated outdoor activities and nature during your stay with us.
Jodi is a qualified UNESCO Biosphere Ranger and is never happier than when up in the mountains so you’re in good hands. We also only work with the best providers in the region, whether you fancy a spot of horse riding through wild flower meadows or jumping into a raft for an adrenalin packed paddle!
For families seeking a fun-packed Austrian holiday, we have endless outdoor activities that will keep both little and big kids alike more than entertained (we guarantee all the exercise will mean they sleep in too!).
Whether you like the look of one of our Summer holiday packages or you just want to craft your own holiday with us, just choose your dates, tell us (here) which package plus any of the following activities you like the look of and we’ll do the rest!

canyoning in austria
This is one of the more extreme outdoor activities and sports we’ve ever tried. With the help of a few ropes you’ll make your way down one of Lungau’s dramatic Alpine rivers – making daring jumps into deeper pools, abseiling down waterfalls and trekking through shallow rapids. Not for the feint-hearted but brilliant fun if you like an adrenalin rush! Canyoning trips cost around €80 per person including transfer.
This is a new addition to Lungau’s list of summer attractions and outdoor activities but it’s also one of the most exciting. You can swim or paddle in the lake, try your hand at zorbing in a giant floating ball, or test your vertigo with the giant swing, climbing frames and balancing beams. Scary!
archery in austria
There’s some brilliant local archery fun to be had for our guests thanks to the local Lungau archery workshops and competitions. You can make your own way or there are transfers available with equipment hire available at the site.
Katschberg’s Tree Top Adventure Park is one of Austria’s largest outdoor adventure parks. It’s effectively a tree-top assault course, situated up in the air beneath the forest canopy on a series of elevated walkways and flying fox slides. There are different difficulty levels to suit different ages and the park provides guides and instructors to supervise all activities. The park is open from May to November from 9am to 6pm and takes approximately 3 hours to master! Please check for availability.
day trips from lungau
You don’t have to be into extreme sports to have a great time in Austria and there are all manner of amazing day trips you could make from St Michael. It’s just as easy to spend a day wandering around historic Salzburg as it is to do a tour of the local farm shops here in Lungau, and there are more beautiful and interesting places within driving distance than it’s possible to list. Try Hallstatt (above) or St Wolfgang in Salzkammergut for starters – two of the most beautiful and celebrated lakeside towns in Austria. Closer to home we have two famous Austrian castles on our doorstep: in medieval times Mauterndorf Castle was an important landmark and trading point, while more recently it was a childhood home of Hermann Göring; Schloß Moosham, on the other hand, has a slightly darker past, being famous for burning witches! For something more relaxing, why not visit one of the traditional spa towns like Bad Ischl? Or you could even visit one of our neighbouring countries: Italy and Slovenia are within easy striking distance.
horse riding in the austrian alps & lungau
There are a number of stables in the area, offering everything from beginners’ lessons for children to mountain pony treks. We can book these on your behalf prior to your visit or you can wait until you get here, then weigh up the conditions.
flying, paragliding & gliding in the austrian alps & lungau
For visitors who like the idea of taking a pleasure flight or flying themselves, Lungau is the perfect destination. We have a number of airfields offering pleasure flights, plus remote controlled planes and towed flights in gliders and hang gliders.
Herby is not only a member of the local Mauterndorf flying club and a keen flyer, he’s also able to take guests on pleasure flights. He’s been flying for more than 20 years now – first without an engine and then moving on to do his private pilot’s licence. If you’re interested in flying, or perhaps in learning to fly a glider, let us know and Herby can give you some options.
