Snow shoe trekking
Winter hiking with snowshoes through Austria’s Lungau region is both invigorating and peaceful. At 1000 metres above sea level the Lungau valley offers crystal-clear mountain air and wonderful scenery covered in sparkling snow. All you’ll need is normal winter sportswear, with lots of layers to peel off as you start to heat up. Sunglasses are also a must: winter in the Lungau is sunny too.
Here are some images from a recent snow shoe trek up in the Alpine mountains above St Michael um Lungau. Beautiful scenery and huge amounts of fun!
Ski Touring & Off-Piste experiences
Lungau’s mountains and terrain provide perfect ski touring conditions for people of all experience levels and abilities.
We can arrange a fantastic ski touring & off-piste skiing experience here in the Austrian Alps complete with your own guide and equipment, or we can show you where to go if you’re happy to head out by yourselves. Some of the fun includes finding the best mountain huts for a refreshing meal and beer plus digging a snow hole before returning to your cosy chalet!
Our ski touring & off-piste trips vary in difficulty based on your preferences and ability – some are totally off-piste and some stick to the groomed slopes. Our goal is to expand your horizons, not to push you out of your comfort zone!
Take a look at the images below to see what fun you can have among amazing alpine landscapes (beers included!)!
Sometimes we join guests on their ski touring excursions but we also work with some excellent guides here in Lungau ensuring you enjoy the instruction you need to hike among the best Lungau mountain tracks and landscapes, maybe dig a snow hole, then, feeling refreshed, to ski down again. You can of course vary the difficulty of your own ski touring trip, whether you fancy off-piste fun or just want to stick to the groomed slopes.
Your guide will help you improve your technique and make sure you soon master this amazingly satisfying activity at whatever intensity you like – our goal is to expand your horizons, not to push you out of your comfort zone though!
Winter hiking & Nordic Fitness
Winter hiking – commonly known as ‘Nordic fitness’ – is increasingly popular. Nordic Fitness is essentially the winter version of Nordic walking and, in the same way, involves a fairly active motion using long carbon walking poles to propel you forward and work your upper body. Unlike it’s summer counterpart, the term Nordic fitness can include walking, snowshoeing or even cross country skiing.
Ideal location for Winter Hiking & Nordic Fitness
The Lungau Valley sits between 1000 meters and 1500 meters above sea level, which is quite high compared to other parts of the Austrian Alps, making it an ideal Nordic fitness location.
Within this largely unspoilt landscape you can find 15 different Nordic walking paths, covering a total of 120km. Each route offers a different challenge, with the trails ranging anywhere from 3.6km to 14.5km in length and a change in elevation of anything up to 400 meters or more.
Well-placed information boards will guide you through the snowy landscape and along the well maintained tracks. You can even venture out with your children; it’s possible to navigate some paths with strollers, even in the winter, or if you’re feeling brave why not borrow a sledge and drag them along behind you?
Nordic Fitness Instruction in Lungau
With a little training, Nordic walking can be fantastic exercise and can improve both strength and flexibility. We arrange Nordic Fitness trips for guests every week and we can also provide a bit of instruction plus show you how to get to some of the best Lungau locations (and tastiest restaurants!)!
Easy walks around Lungau
There are hundreds of walks near St Martin Chalets, some strenuous, others easy. For those of you who don’t want to get work up a sweat, we can point you in the direction of a pleasant stroll along the valley floor.
Or we’re within easy reach of various places of interest and historical towns such as Mauterndorf, where Hermann Goering once owned the castle. St Michael itself is a lovely, traditional mountain town and well worth wandering around too. There are plenty of interesting shops, plus numerous cafés, bars and restaurants, and several hotels who welcome non-residents. We have a very good relationship with a number of these, so if you’d like a swim, massage or beauty treatment, we can arrange for you to use their facilities.
