Prepare yourself for the most amazing, adrenalin-packed Austrian Ice Driving experience!
We love skiing and snowboarding. Who doesn’t? But when it comes to serious speed and plenty of fun then there is definitely nothing quite like a spot of driving on ice!
Lungau is known for it’s perfect ice driving conditions, so much so that a whole selection of international car manufacturers carry out winter tests here, using both the ‘Lungauring’ and ‘Winterfahrtraining Franz Schiefer’ circuits, both within 30 minutes of us here at St Martin Chalets.
“Whether it’s an escape from the piste you’re looking for or you just fancy something a little more dramatic than a black run, then ice driving in Lungau is your answer!”
Road or rally car?!
Depending on time of year and availability, you can choose from a range of specific courses and vehicles, whether you want to pit your skills against the circuit in a road car or fancy testing yourself in a full-blown rally or performance car…from Mitsubishi Lancer Evos to Subaru Imprezas and and an Audi RS.
The intricate courses will definitely test you, but you’ll soon find it’s all about getting the right drift angle. Before you know it you’ll be sliding your car sideways with abandon!
Ice Driving prices
Prices for the Lungau’s best Austrian ice driving excursions start from around 35 Euros for a passenger lap around the ice driving course with a professional driver at the wheel. If the idea of someone else driving just doesn’t cut it though, you could opt for the half-day ice driving course, which starts from around €60 per person, or a full day ice driving course from approx €120.
Winterfahtraining also offer a Ladies-only Ice Driving Experience (youtube vid here) which is perfect if you’ve got a group of friends Or you could opt for a half or full day of ‘Ice Drifting’ (price varies), which is as good as it sounds!
Winter Driver Training
Lewis Hamilton wannabes aside, you can also head out to Lungau to improve your winter driving skills, which is actually something every driver should learn!
There’s still a massive adrenaline rush of course, but Lungau’s Winter Driving Training courses are also brilliantly informative, helping you become a better driver throughout the year and not just during winter months. Prices start from from €295, which includes plenty of tuition and driving of course, plus lunch, drinks, plenty of cake and private radio.
Lungau’s Ice Driving Circuits
There are two renowned ice driving circuits we tend to work with here at St Martin Chalets, both within 30 minutes drive. ADC Lungau also provide some fantastic experiences (keep scrolling for their great video!):
1) Winterfahtraining – The Original Winter Driving School
These chaps really know what they are talking about when it comes to Austrian ice driving!
For more than 20 years they have been the true professionals in the business of 4 wheels on ice, with their heady adventure camp style ice driving experiences a real hit with many of our guests!
Heading their team is Franz Schiefer, previously Austria’s top flight ice speedway driver with over 30 years experience both driving and teaching on ice. Chief Instructor Reini Sampl was long involved in the Ski World Cup and Paralympics, enjoying more than his share of successes over the years.
Combined with his experience in the Austrian Rally Championship and you’ve got an instructor who knows more about going fast on ice than anyone you’ve ever met. See him in action below, as well as the Winterfahtraining circuit map:
The Lungauring is just a 15-minute walk from the St Martin Chalets so the petrol heads amongst you couldn’t be nearer to a serious adrenalin hit!
The Circuit itself is a particularly fun affair, where manufacturers use the top-quality training and testing facilities to perfect performance. For you though, the “Driving Technology Training & Test Center” is exactly what you need to give your driving skills a boost. As well as providing car handling instruction, the centre also focuses on vehicle testing, research, driver qualification and future mobility projects.
3) ADC Lungau
This is another ice driving circuit in Lungau, where the focus is on driver development as well as fun…just hit play on the ice driving video below if you don’t believe us!
