Summer holidays in the Lungau Alpine region near Salzburg are always a joy, especially when spending time with friends, including my friend Isabella, where we made time to do some mountain biking and hiking.
Isabella (check out the tan lines!) is very fit, has unbelievable stamina and is an avid climber, mountaineer and biker, so I knew I’d have my work cut out keeping up with her. I just about managed it though and we had a lovely, uninterrupted day of nothing but pure mountain air and exercise, surrounded by Lungau’s amazing scenery and wild flowers.
We started on mountain bikes, making our way up as far as the track would let us. Here we parked and proceeded on foot. We made our way all the way up to the Liasalm Balonspitz, which reaches up to 2478m, where we were treated to stunning panoramic views. Austria’s beauty never fails!
On our way back down we stopped at one of Lungau’s many ‘Alms’ for some freshly baked bread, home made cheese and cold meats. Nothing has ever tasted so good, believe me – especially after hiking, biking and a little bit of climbing practice, all above 1000 metres. Wonderful.
At times like these I always think how lucky I am to live in such a beautiful part of the world and, when I do get time to myself, I’m sure not to take my mobile phone with me (or at least not to be checking it constantly). It’s hard to escape emails and phone calls in these modern times, but that only makes a day in the mountains feel all the more special. I cherish opportunities like this and I hope to have many more to come.
I hope you enjoy the photos as much as I enjoyed being there and hopefully, one day, you might join us to see them for yourself!
